Wal-Mart and Costco make price shopping easier online

unit price Six major retailers are adding unit pricing to their websites, making it easier to compare prices online, but the world's largest retailer is staying out. NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Six major retailers will be making it easier to secure good deals on their websites. But Amazon, the world's biggest online retailer, is staying away from the initiative.

The companies -- Wal-Mart (WMT), Costco (COST), Walgreens (WAG), FreshDirect, CVS (CVS) and Drugstore.com -- agreed to add unit prices to their product pages over the next nine months.

Unit prices, which are already common at many of the retailers' physical locations, show what a package of ground beef costs per pound, for example, or the price of a single aspirin within a bottle of 300. That helps customers price shop when different products are different sizes.

"We think that this is going to make shopping at Walmart and realizing how much you're saving at Walmart even easier," said Ravi Jariwala, a spokesman for Walmart.

The agreement was announced on Tuesday by New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who helped broker it.

Amazon's (AMZN, Tech30) resistance to unit pricing confused analysts.

Sucharita Mulpuru-Kodali, a vice president at retail analysts Forrester Research, wrote in an email that, since Amazon often has the lowest prices, comparisons usually benefit them.

"I have no idea why Amazon wouldn't agree to this," she wrote.

The company already offers unit prices for some items, including certain foods, medicine and other goods.

"Customers rely on Amazon for all kinds of product information, including descriptions, ratings, customer reviews, frequently asked questions and pricing," said an Amazon spokeswoman in a statement. "Unit pricing is included on www.amazon.com."

So why not participate in the new initiative with its competitors, expanding unit pricing to all items on its website? Amazon wouldn't comment. But the company has long tried to distinguish itself from competitors with physical stores, said Bob Hetu, research director of retail merchandising for tech consultancy Gartner.

"I think it's just that they don't like to be pooled in with the other retailers," he said.

Despite Amazon's prices, other retailer! s are starting to push back and that pressure would probably bring Amazon along, Hetu said.

Best Energy Companies To Buy Right Now

Given that it's a defense contractor and all, you'd probably expect Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT  ) to appreciate the value of strategic surprise -- but today's news out of LockMart was nonetheless quite unexpected.

On Tuesday, Lockheed revealed a move in a very surprising direction for an arms merchant to be taking: It's begun a green-energy project. And it's begun it in China. Specifically, Lockheed announced that in cooperation with "green" Chinese enterprise Reignwood Group, it has begun developing an Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion, or OTEC, pilot power plant off the coast of southern China.

OTEC refers to using temperature differentials in ocean waters to generate power. Lockheed didn't go into the specifics of how OTEC works, scientifically, but it did note that because these differentials are more or less permanent, the power generated by an OTEC plant is consistent, running "24 hours a day, 365 days a year."

Reignwood and Lockheed signed a memorandum of agreement to build the plant Saturday. The plan, as Lockheed describes it, is to build a 10-megawatt plant off the Chinese coast. 10 megawatts should be sufficient to supply all the energy needed to power a "green resort" that Reignwood will be building on the mainland.

Top 5 Growth Stocks To Invest In Right Now

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy grew from April through June at an annual rate of 1.7% — a sluggish pace but stronger than in the previous quarter. Businesses spent more, and the federal government cut less, offsetting weaker spending by consumers.

The government on Wednesday sharply revised down its estimate of growth in the January-March quarter to a 1.1% annual rate from a previously estimated 1.8% rate.

Though growth remains weak, the pickup last quarter supports forecasts that the economy will accelerate in the rest of the year. Economists think businesses will step up investment, job growth will fuel more consumer spending and the drag from government cuts will fade. If so, the Federal Reserve could scale back its stimulus later this year.

The April-June growth figure indicates that "the recovery is gaining momentum," Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics, said in a note to clients.

During the April-June quarter, businesses increased their spending 4.6% after cutting by the same amount in the January-March period. And spending on home construction grew 13.4%, in line with the previous quarter.

For those looking to invest in real estate stocks, highly recommended is the Dr. Housing Bubble blog. In a recent posting, the "Dr." pointed out that there was a "Lost Generation" when it came to household income. That has not happened for those investing in staffing industry stocks such as Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX), Robert Half International (NYSE: RHI), TrueBlue, Inc. (NYSE: TBI), and Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC).

  • [By Travis Hoium]

What: Shares of staffing agency TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI  ) jumped 10% today after the company reported earnings.

Other firms have done well in the staffing industry include Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX) and ManPower Group (NYSE: MAN).

Jin Lee/APAutoNation CEO Mike Jackson If you follow the financial media regularly, you will find daily predictions about the direction of the markets. Breakout, a daily blog on Yahoo Finance's website, is typical of what passes for financial information. On Sept. 6, Breakout's Jeff Macke featured Mike Jackson, the CEO of AutoNation (AN), as his guest. Jackson opined that the economy "has moved into a self-sustaining recovery." He may or may not be correct in that assessment, but relying on his views or the views of others claiming predictive powers is more akin to gambling than investing. Macke's program is no worse than what is dispensed by many of his colleagues in the media. The format is familiar to all of us: Intelligent people in positions of power and influence make rational-sounding statements about the economy, the direction of the market or the merit of a particular stock or fund. What's missing is any data indicating that their views are worthy of consideration, based on a history of accurate past predictions or demonstration of predictive skill (as contrasted with luck). There is ample evidence to the contrary. In a paper published in July 2010, three finance professors from Duke University and Ohio State University published the results of an extensive survey they performed. Each quarter from March 2001 to February 2010, they surveyed "top U.S. financial executives." They asked them to predict one- and 10-year stock market returns and also for their predictions of best- and worst-case outcomes. The data they gathered aggregated 11,600 S&P 500 forecasts. You would think the accumulated expertise of these executives would permit them to make fairly accurate predictions about a commonly used index such as the S&P 500 (^GSPC). The opposite was true. The authors of the study found no correlation between the estimates of these top financial executives and the actual value of the index. In fact, the correlation was negative. When they predic

Best Performing Stocks To Invest In 2014: Electro Scientific Industries Inc (ESIO)

Electro Scientific Industries, Inc. (ESI) incorporated on April 19, 1949, is a supplier of laser-based manufacturing solutions for the microtechnology industry. The Company operates high-technology manufacturing equipment, which consists of products that are organized in three groups: interconnect & microfabrication, semiconductor and components. The Company laser systems enable precise structuring of micron to submicron features in components and devices which are used in a wide variety of end products in the consumer electronics, computer, semiconductor, communications and other markets. Its laser microfabrication systems allow microelectronics, semiconductor, and other microtechnology manufacturers to physically alter select device features during high-volume production. In June 2012, it acquired Eolite Systems.

The Company laser-based systems improve production yields or enable improved performance for flexible and rigid high density interconnect printed circuit boards, semiconductor devices, light emitting diodes (LEDs), advanced semiconductor packaging, touch-panel glass, flat panel liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and other high value components. Additionally, it produces high-capacity test and inspection equipment that is critical to control process during the production of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). Its equipment ensures that each component meets the electrical and physical tolerances required to perform properly. Lastly, it produces systems that use photonic technology to perform precision inspection for control and defect identification. The Company Interconnect & Microfabrication Group products address an expanding number of applications and materials on a broad set of substrates, including panels, continuous-feed reels, and discrete three dimensional components or devices.

Interconnect Via Drilling

For electrical interconnect applications, The Company laser via micro fabrication systems target applications that require the ! highest accuracy and smallest via (hole) dimensions to create electrical connections between layers in flexible circuits, high-density circuit boards and IC packages. The Company microvia drilling technology addresses the rapidly changing applications in IC packages, multichip modules and HDI circuit boards. Its ultraviolet (UV) laser processing systems employ technology in lasers, optics and motion control.

Advanced Microfabrication

The Company offers several platforms that enable customers to perform precision drilling, scribing, cutting, etching, routing or marking on many different types of materials and devices including glass, metal, plastic, paint and ceramics. It also offer laser ablation systems that ablate material for identification and analysis applications, including forensics, mineral analysis and research.

Semiconductor Group (SG)

The Company Semiconductor Group products address multiple applications that utilize laser energy to process materials on wafer-based substrates. This includes traditional silicon wafers, LEDs wafers, and new ultrathin silicon wafers used in the three-dimensional (3D) packaging applications. Semiconductor Memory Yield Improvement Systems includes semiconductor memory yield improvement products are designed to cost-effectively enable post-repair yield improvements in the manufacturing of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) memory devices.

3D Semiconductor Wafer Processing

The 3D chip packaging technologies is driving the need for silicon wafers to become thinner in order to allow for stacking of wafers within the same packaging geometry. As wafers become thinner, they become more challenging to cut into discrete chips using traditional mechanical saws. The Company model 9900 uses a laser to dice ultra-thin silicon wafers, those with a thickness of 50 microns or below, and to singulate interposers. In addition, this platform can be used to scribe next generation thin film ! materials! that lend themselves to laser processing.

LED Wafer Scribing

The Company AccuScribe line of sapphire wafer scribing systems is a key component in the manufacture of LEDs. During production, LEDs are created on a thin wafer of synthetic sapphire crystal that must be broken into individual units at the end of the process. The brittle nature of the sapphire wafer requires that it be carefully cut in order to prevent unwanted fractures, yield losses, and lower light output when the wafer is broken apart into discrete LEDs. The AccuScribe systems use a laser to scribe the wafer with a precise groove between individual LEDs. When mechanical force is applied to the wafer, it fractures along these grooves and allows the wafer to be split apart into discrete LEDs. These systems are capable of scribing both standard and high brightness designs for general illumination applications. In addition, this platform can be used to address singulation of various LED packaging materials.

LCD Repair

The Comapny's laser LCD repair systems are critical to improving yields in the manufacture of flat panel displays. During production, individual pixels of a display may develop electrical defects that result in no light emission or the emission of only a steady white light. To correct these defects, flat panel display producers employ a laser repair process to isolate the electrical defects during production by cutting the inputs to the pixel. Its laser systems are primarily sold to the manufacturers of LCD repair tools as a key component of their products.

Semiconductor Systems

The products include industry wafer marking equipment, wafer and circuit trim tools, and LCD repair tools. Wafer marking equipment is used for serialization and wafer identification by both manufacturers of semiconductor wafers and within semiconductor fabs. Wafer and circuit trim tools are laser systems that adjust the electrical performance of semiconductor devic! es or hyb! rid circuits by removing a precise amount of material from one or more circuit components.

Components Group (CG)

The Company designs and manufactures products that combine high-speed small parts handling technology with real-time control systems to provide automated, cost-effective inspection solutions for manufacturers of MLCC and other passive components such as capacitor arrays, inductors, resistors, varistors and hybrid circuits. These components, produced in quantities of trillions of units per year, process analog, digital and high-frequency signals and are used in all electronic products.

The Company provides several types of products and solutions in this market. Its MLCC test systems employ high-speed handling and positioning techniques to precisely load, test and sort MLCCs based on their electrical energy storage capacity, or capacitance, and their electrical energy leakage, or dissipation factor. Its 35XX series is the productive tester. Its 3510 model enables high speed testing of the industry smallest metric 0402 capacitors used primarily in advanced cell phone and tablet designs. It also produces consumable products, such as carrier plates and termination belts, both of which are used to hold MLCCs during the manufacturing and testing process.

The Company competes with Mechanics, Ltd., LPKF Laser & Electronics AG, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Orbotech Ltd., InnoLas Systems GmbH, DISCO Corporation, Laser Solutions, Inc., Quantel USA, Inc., Humo Laboratory, Ltd. and HOYA Corporation.

One electronics wholesales player that insiders are active in here is Avnet (AVT), which distributes electronic components, enterprise computer and storage products, IT solutions and services, and embedded subsystems in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia/Pacific. Insiders are buying this stock into modest weakness, since shares are down by 4.3% so far in 2014.

Avnet has a market cap of $5.8 billion and an enterprise value of $6.9 billion. This stock trades at a reasonable valuation, with a trailing price-to-earnings of 12 and a forward price-to-earnings of 8.4. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 9.4%, and for next year it's pegged at 8.2%. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $928.97 million and its total debt is $2.08 billion. This stock currently sports a dividend yield of 1.4%.

From a technical perspective, AVT is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bearish. This stock recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $40.90 to $40.77 a share. Following that bottom, shares of AVT have started to rip higher with strong upside volume flows.

If you're bullish on AVT, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above that recent low of $40.77 and then once it breaks out above its 200-day at $42.71 and its 50-day at $43.59 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 661,673 shares. If that breakout begins soon, then AVT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $43.95 to $45.24 a share, or $45.53 a share. Top Long Term Companies To Own For 2014

Double, double, toil and trouble, fire burn, and cauldron bubble. (the three witches chanting)
Macbeth, Act 4, Scene 1

Triple witching hour refers to the quarterly expiration of index futures, index future options and stock options on the third Friday of March, June, September and December. This can, and often does, make for some chaotic trading as the large trading houses and hedge funds either close out their inter-related positions or roll them over to the next month. It is less messy than it used to be as the closing out is spread over the entire week and not done all on Friday as in years past. Still, it can make for some violent price swings this week. While not of much concern to the long term investor, the active trader needs to be extra cautious. This is why I recommend that all but the most experienced options traders unwind their positions by Thursday before expiration at the latest.

Combine this with the (soon to be outgoing) Fed chair speaking on Wednesday and the elections in Germany this Sunday and we have all the ingredients for a very volatile market.

Which is why it surprises me that the implied volatility indicator, VIX, is just around 14. That seems low to me given all the uncertainty as the market retests new highs. Hey, in June it was well over 20.

This tells me two things: One, buying a potential move in the stock market (straddles, strangles, etc) is a cheap speculative trade. And, two, if you want to hang on to your stock portfolio even as we're at sky high levels you can buy relatively cheap downside protection in the form of out of the money puts.

Actually, there's a third thing: Being net short option premium at these low levels with the three witches stirring the pot is a bad risk vs reward trade.

Dear Fellow Shareholder: The U.S. economy continues to gradually expand, building on the 5+ year recovery from the Great Recession. Employment levels are improving, though progress has been slower than expected. Inflation, for now, remains subdued. As signaled and on cue, the Fed has been weaning the economy (and investors) off of the extraordinary uantitative easingstimulus. Investors have generally shrugged off world events that might otherwise cause high anxiety (ISIS and the Middle East, Russia and Ukraine, etc.). As attention now turns to when the Fed will raise short-term interest rates, it seems plausible that volatility may intensify as the stimulus security blanket is removed. In the meantime, companies are taking advantage of the artificially low interest rate environment and sanguine investor sentiment. Merger activity remains robust, fueled by cheap and readily available credit. The IPO market has been very active, headlined by the successful Alibaba offering in September. Corporate treasurers continue to issue loads of debt on attractive terms, locking in generationally low interest rates for long terms. While these conditions will not last forever, they have helped opportunistic managers accelerate equity value growth at many companies.Investment Commentary and Outlook After three years of seemingly non-stop gains, the stock market took a pause in the third quarter. While most large cap indices eked out modest positive returns, the broader investing waters were far less placid. Small cap stocks sold off as the Russell 2000 declined more than 7% during the quarter. Energy stocks, both large and small, fell materially as investors worried about too much oil and gas supply coming online in North America (what a difference a decade makes). High yield bonds wobbled briefly in July, then again in September. Increasingly, investors are not treating all securities the same, and as stock pickers we welcome this development. In the 4D medical world, Organovo Holdings Inc. (NYSE MKT: ONVO) appears to be off to a good start. They've got a number of bioprinting projects centered around functional human tissue, including a liver product that's planned for 2014. I believe the company will quickly branch into tumor modeling, transplantation, and pharma research.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Organovo (ONVO) develops 3D bioprinting technology for creating functional human tissues on demand for research and medical applications. This stock closed up 2.5% to $5.98 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $5.70-$6.07

    52-Week Range: $1.80-$8.50

    Thursday's Volume: 2.03 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 2.82 million

From a technical perspective, ONVO jumped higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $5.79 with decent upside volume. This move is starting to push shares of ONVO within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if ONVO manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $6.20 to $6.39 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ONVO as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $5.50 or at $5 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 2.82 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ONVO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $7.50 to its 52-week high at $8.50. Any high-volume move above $8.50 will then put its all-time high at $10.90 within range for shares of ONVO.

Despitea slow global economy and continued high unemployment in many countries, small cap payday or pawn stocks Cash Store Financial Services Inc (NYSE: CSFS), DFC Global Corp (NASDAQ: DLLR) and Cash America International, Inc (NYSE: CSH) have not exactly been performing well since the start of the year. In fact, these three stocks are the worst performers in the payday or pawn loan sector, down 38.5%, down 14.4% and up 4.6%, respectively, since the start of the year.

That might come as a surprise given the proliferation of payday or pawn loan store fronts throughout the US, but I should also mention that the Cash Store Financial Services is focused on the Canadian and UK markets, DFC Global Corp has a global presence and Cash America International is focused on the US and Mexican markets. Moreover, there have long been concerns about payday or pawn loan types of lenders busingthe poor with the latest indirect bad news for the industry coming yesterday with the news that New York's attorney general is suing three online lenders on allegationsthey charged interest rates to low-income New Yorkers that were more than 10 times higher than state law allows.
