Andy Wong/AP Alibaba (BABA) is the new belle of the dot-com ball in China. The e-commerce juggernaut pulled off a record initial public offering in September when it raised $25 billion on the way to becoming a public company. Analysts love Alibaba. They were able to initiate coverage on Wednesday, following the 40-day quiet period that follows an IPO's debut. Only one of its underwriters -- Goldman Sachs -- failed to tap it as a buy recommendation. It's easy to see the appeal. Alibaba helped 231 million active buyers place 11.3 billion orders totaling $248 billion in transactions last year, and it's just getting started. However, the stock, with its nearly $250 billion market cap, isn't cheap. Let's look at some Chinese dot-coms that have been trading longer and could be more compelling bargains. Baidu (BIDU) China's leading search engine posted another blowout quarter on Wednesday, just as analysts were gushing all over Alibaba. The company behind China's largest search engine saw revenue soar 52 percent over the prior year's third quarter. Earnings climbed just 27 percent, but that was twice as fast as analysts were expecting. Baidu is investing in low-margin online specialties including travel, video and mobile app storefronts, and that weighs on bottom-line growth. Baidu remains one of China's biggest winners. It went public nine years ago at a split-adjusted price of $2.70, and now it trades north of $200. Baidu fulfills roughly two-thirds of all queries, and it is rocking at a time when its profitability is still suppressed. 51job (JOBS) Matching employees to potential hires started out with old-school tech for 51job. It got its start by inserting weekly job listings in more than two dozen leading Chinese newspapers. Then the Internet came along, allowing 51job to convert its thick Rolodex and respected brand into a leading online recruiter. It's working: 51job is growing its revenue in the low double digits. It's trading at a reasonable 22 time

51job (JOBS), an online job search website similar to Monster.com (MWW), has surged more 60% this year.

But there is one notable Chinese dot-com stock that's sitting out the big rally. Shares of Renren (RENN), the social network known as China's Facebook (FB, Fortune 500), are down 3% for the year.

As US and global economies recover, hiring should increase with overlooked recruitment related stocks like Cornerstone OnDemand, Inc (NASDAQ: CSOD), 51job, Inc (NASDAQ: JOBS) and Staffing 360 Solutions Inc (OTCBB: STAF) being among the first to benefit aside from those who have found employment:

According to Li, Baidu's planned payouts to union members would equal to 13.7% of Citi's revenue target for Baidu this year, up sharply from last year's 8.7% cut. Is Baidu being more generous to keep webmasters close? This doesn't seem necessary. Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU  ) is just starting to monetize its search engine, so it will be a long time before advertisers are willing to pay up for leads through Qihoo 360's network. Qihoo 360's move for an in-house solution means less action for its ad-serving partner Google, and that weakens another potential Baidu rival.

Best Telecom Companies To Watch For 2014

DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) will not raise its bid to buy Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S  ) after SoftBank's most recent counteroffer to the satellite TV provider's proposal, DISH announced late yesterday.

Instead, DISH said it would concentrate on acquiring Clearwire, the network provider that Sprint is also bidding on. DISH said in a statement:

While DISH continues to see strategic value in a merger with Sprint, the decisions made by Sprint to prematurely terminate our due diligence process and accept extreme deal protections in its revised agreement with SoftBank, among other things, have made it impracticable for DISH to submit a revised offer by the June 18th deadline imposed by Sprint. We will consider our options with respect to Sprint, and focus our efforts and resources on completing the Clearwire tender offer.

Japanese telecom SoftBank's original agreement with Sprint called for $20.1 billion to acquire 70% of the No. 3 U.S. carrier. DISH's counteroffer of $25.5 billion for Sprint seemed to be enough to sway shareholders to vote down the SoftBank deal. However, SoftBank's new agreement with Sprint calls for an additional $4.5 billion in cash for Sprint stockholders, and that has effectively undercut DISH's efforts.

Another under-$10 wireless telecom player that's starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Partner Communications (PTNR), a telecommunications company, provides cellular and fixed-line telecommunication services in Israel. This stock is off to a strong start in 2013, with shares up sharply by 29%.

If you take a look at the chart for Partner Communications, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways for the last month, with shares moving between $7.28 on the downside and $7.96 on the upside. Shares of PTRN are bucking the overall market weakness today as the stock starts to move within range of triggering a breakout trade above the upper-end of its sideways trading chart pattern.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in PTNR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $7.80 to $7.85 a share and then once it clears its 52-week high at $7.96 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 107,303 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PTNR will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $10 to $12.20 a share.

Traders can look to buy PTNR off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $7.38 to $7.28, or below its 50-day at $6.97 a share. One can also buy PTNR off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on j2 Global (Nasdaq: JCOM  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another potential earnings short-squeeze trade idea is cloud services player J2 Global (JCOM), which is set to release its numbers on Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect J2 Global to report revenue $130.43 million on earnings of 71cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for J2 Global is extremely high at 20.6%. That means that out of the 43.70 million shares in the tradable float, 9.01 million shares are sold short by the bears. If the bulls get the earnings news they're looking for, then shares of JCOM could easily explode higher post-earnings.

From a technical perspective, JCOM is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last six months, with shares moving higher from its low of $38.07 to its recent high of $56.24 a share. During that uptrend, shares of JCOM have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of JCOM within range of triggering a major breakout trade post-earnings.

If you're in the bull camp on JCOM, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above its 52-week high at $56.42 a share (or Tuesday's intraday high if higher) on high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 292,457 shares. If that breakout hits, then JCOM will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $65 to $75 a share.

I would simply avoid JCOM or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout, and then drops below some key near-term support levels at $54 to $53 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then JCOM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its ne

The threat of a looming government shutdown has already sent stocks tumbling. Could it also trip up Twitter IPO? The social media company wants to list its shares within a few months, according to reports, but a government shutdown would include the SEC and might interfere with those plans.

Twitter announced on September 12th that it had confidentially filed a prospectus (Form S-1) for an initial public offering. However, this was not the real beginning of the process: the company had filed the paperwork two months earlier, and was only making the announcement to get ahead of press leaks. News site Quartz reports Twitter planned to make its confidential filing public this week, with a goal of trading its shares sometime before Thanksgiving.

A potential government shutdown could upend this timeline, because a closing of the government would mean pausing a significant portion of the U.S Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and its duties.

f the company is towards the end of the process and trying to price its transactions, it presents a lot of uncertainty and potential difficulties, said David Lynn, a partner with law firm Morrison & Foerster and former chief counsel at the SEC Division of Corporation Finance. During a shutdown, he said, o one can look at the final versions of the registration statement, and that has to happen before they can price and sell securities./p>

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another stock that's starting to move within range of a big breakout trade is Performance Technologies (PTIX), which is a supplier of advanced network communications solutions to carrier, government and OEM markets. This stock has been red hot so far in 2013, with shares up huge by 275%.

If you take a look at the chart for Performance Technologies, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways and consolidating for the last three months and change, with shares moving between $2.50 on the downside and $3.97 on the upside. Shares of PTIX have now started to spike higher back above its 50-day moving average of $2.92 a share with bullish upside volume flows. This spike is quickly pushing shares of PTIX within range of triggering a big breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in PTIX if it manages to break out above some key overhead resistance levels at $3.40 to $3.79 a share, and then once it takes out its 52-week high at $3.97 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 167,669 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then PTIX will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $6 to $7 a share.

Traders can look to buy PTIX off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support around $2.50 a share. One can also buy PTIX off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Top 5 Life Sciences Stocks For 2014

Following up on a strong earnings report from Wednesday, hi-tech glassmaker Corning (NYSE: GLW  ) offered further details this morning on its plans for the future.

Specifically, Corning announced plans to capitalize upon a coming wave in new environmental regulation of heavy-duty engines in Europe and China, by investing similarly heavily in its production of diesel emissions control products.

Corning says it will spend about $250 million on capital improvements in its Environmental Technologies&Life SciencesBusiness Group, hoping to double its revenues from the group by 2017. Corning will spend to increase capacity at its Erwin diesel facility, which manufactures large ceramic substrates and filters for heavy-duty diesel engine, truck, construction, and agricultural equipment manufacturers.

However, all this new spending will not affect Corning's forecast for 2013 capital expenditures, the company assured investors. Yesterday, Corning pegged 2013 capex spending at approximately $1.3 billion, down from last year's $1.8 billion. With investments in clean diesel being spread out over the next three years, Corning has already figured this investment into capital spending projections for 2013 and 2014. The company gave no such assurances for 2015, however, when the expanded diesel facilities should go into operation.

Hot Solar Companies To Invest In 2014

On Tuesday, electric car stock Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) sank 14.31% after investors read a goldilocks set of scenariospresented byGoldman Sachs analyst Patrick Archambault and that news also seemed todrag downsolar stock SolarCity Corp (NASDAQ: SCTY) as it fell 8.65%. Why would bad news about an electric car stock hit a solar stock? Simply put, SolarCity Corp has a very close relationship with both Elon Musk and Tesla Motorsmeaning if either stumble or fail for investors, the fall out could hit SCTY.

SolarCity Corp Elon Musk and Tesla Motors Connection: An Achilles Heal?

On the surface, SolarCitylooks like a better bet than most solar stocks because its not involved in themanufacture of solar panels, but ratherit a provider offull-service solar power system design, financing, installation and monitoring services. More specifically, the companysells power toits customersduring the day when demand is low while utilities provide power atnight when demand is greater.

    Thursday
Solar-energy stocks are rising again, and LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK  ) will give alternative-energy investors a fresh snapshot on the state of solar on Thursday. Yes, the market's braced for a significant quarterly deficit, but we're talking about a lot less red ink than LDK Solar was sporting a year earlier.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 name that's starting to move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is LDK Solar (LDK), a vertically integrated manufacturer of PV products for polysilicon, wafers, cells, modules, systems, power projects and solutions. This stock is off to a decent start in 2013, with shares up 13.1%.

If you take a look at the chart for LDK Solar, you'll notice that this stock has been trending range bound and consolidating for the last month and change, with shares moving between $1.42 on the downside and $2 a share on the upside. Shares of LDK have just started to trend back above its 50-day moving average at $1.55 a share with decent upside volume flows. That move is quickly pushing shares of LDK within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above a key downtrend line that has acted as resistance for a few months.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in LDK if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.78 to $1.83 a share and then once it clears more resistance at $2 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.97 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then LDK will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.17 to its 52-week high at $2.32 a share. Any high-volume move above $2.32 to $2.36 will then give LDK a chance to tag $3 to $3.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy LDK off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at its 200-day moving average of $1.46 or at $1.42 a share. One can also buy LDK off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Shares of Phillips 66 (PSX) have jumped today after it sold one of its units to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B). Are investors reaching the wrong conclusion?

    Bloomberg

Here’s what happened: Phillips 66 said that it had sold its specialty products unit to Berkshire Hathaway for $1.4 billion. Berkshire, however, chose not to pay for the division with cash, which would have been easy considering its cash hoard, but in shares of Phillips 66–19 million shares that Berkshire already owns. Could that be sign that Buffett thinks shares of Phillip 66, which have gained 45% this year, have run too far?

Now Berkshire has done a lot of portfolio management in the energy sector this year. For instance, it bought oodles of Exxon Mobil (XOM) in November, while offloading some 20 million shares of ConocoPhillips (COP)–and it takes smarter folks than me to explain why.

Still, it’s something to think about heading into the New Year.

Shares of Phillips 66 have gained 3% to $76.94 today at 11:41 a.m., while Exxon Mobil has advanced 0.6% to $100.92, ConocoPhillips has risen 1% to $70.58 and Berkshire Hathaway is up 0.4% to $118.52.

Marathon Petroleum has capitalized on the supply and demand disparities between U.S. producers and worldwide consumers of energy products. With high demand from resource-poor countries like Japan and South Korea as well as several Western European nations, Marathon, Valero (NYSE: VLO  ) , and Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX  ) have all boosted their exports of refined products to more than half a million barrels at the end of 2012.

The Phillips brothers had nearly abandoned oil for the stability of banking, but the war's effect on oil prices and demand motivated their return. This would prove a wise choice, as Phillips Petroleum's assets swelled to more than $100 million by 1924 thanks to the company's dominant position in natural-gas liquids -- and also because, just over a decade after Phillips' founding, the American banking sector began to suffer the worst run of failures in modern history. Phillips became one of the earliest proponents of gasoline service stations, establishing many along the side of Route 66, after which both its service stations and its later refinery subsidiary (now spinoff) Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX  ) are named. Phillips and Conoco merged in 2002 to create ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP  ) , one of the largest publicly traded oil-and-gas-producing companies in the world.

In recent years, though, investors have discounted the potential impact of inflation on their portfolios. Consider these facts:

Gold is the traditional safe-haven investment for those who believe that inflation will take away the purchasing power of paper currency. Yet the plunge in gold prices has led to a mass exodus of investor interest in gold, with the popular SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) losing billions of dollars not just due to price declines but also as investors have taken money out of the ETF entirely. Inflation-indexed bonds like the Treasury's TIPS have climbed so far in price that their real inflation-adjusted yields are negative, even for bonds that don't mature for another 20 years. That's been excellent news for existing investors in iShares Barclays TIPS Bond (NYSEMKT: TIP  ) and similar inflation-indexed bond investments, but it presents no inflation protection for those considering purchases now. The sole fly in the inflation ointment has come from energy prices, with gasoline and heating-oil prices having remained stubbornly high despite plentiful domestic production from unconventional plays as refiners Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX  ) , Valero (NYSE: VLO  ) , and others have greatly boosted their exports of refined products rather than letting Americans reap the benefits of high supply. Yet even the oil market has seen international spreads narrow, and gasoline prices have finally started to come down modestly, providing further downward pressure on inflation.

Based on the conventional understanding of inflation, you'd think that all these signs of its demise were a good thing. The truth is far less clear.

But dividends can be a major drain, as evidenced by Exelon's (NYSE: EXC  ) and Atlantic Power's (NYSE: AT  ) recent dividend haircuts. Exelon cut its dividend 40%, and Mr. Market has heavily rewarded its decision with a soaring stock price. Atlantic's decision may have been too little, too late, as the utility's 66% dividend division has been accompanied by a steep decline in share prices.

    Atlantic Power
Atlantic Power (NYSE: AT  ) reported earnings on May 8, beating sales estimates and pulling in positive earnings for the first time since Q2 2011.

Although natural gas spikes or stumbles won't have major effects on Duke, less-hedged utilities such as Atlantic Power (NYSE: AT  ) could feel a major squeeze. With 58% gas capacity and plans to focus its future on gas and wind, Atlantic's lack of diversity could put it in a tough position in the quarters ahead.

AGL and Integrys aren't the only utilities switching around subsidiaries. Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK  ) completed its purchase of a 72% stake in Atlantic Power's (NYSE: AT  ) Path 15 transmission project. The 84-mile line connects Northern and Southern California's transmission grids and, according to Duke, plays "a key role in maintaining statewide electric system reliability and market efficiency."

BG Medicine, Inc. was founded in 2000 and is headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

What do BG Medicine, Inc. (NASDAQ:BGMD) and Pentair, Ltd. (NYSE:PNR) have in common? Most investors would say absolutely nothing. BGMD is a small cap medical diagnostics company, while PNR is a large cap industrial equipment manufacturer. Those are worlds that simply never collide. The directions each stock has been traveling in over the past few months have even been polar opposites.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is BG Medicine (BGMD), which develops and commercializes novel cardiovascular diagnostic tests to address unmet medical needs in the U.S. This stock has been pushed lower by the sellers over the last three months, with shares down sharply by 20%.

If you take a glance at the chart for BG Medicine, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending a bit for the last month, with shares moving higher from its low of 90 cents per share to its recent high of $1.12 a share. During that uptrend, shares of BGMD have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of BGMD within range of triggering a big breakout trade above some key near-term overhead resistance levels.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in BGMD if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.08 to $1.12 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.56 million shares. If that breakout gets started soon, then BGMD will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-day zone from May that started near $1.30 a share. Any high-volume move above $1.30 will then give BGMD a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.50 to around $1.70 a share.

Traders can look to buy BGMD off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at 96 cents to 90 cents per share. One can also buy BGMD off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
