Intuitive Surgical's stock has been battered by worse-than-expected third-quarter results, which included the first year-over-year quarterly revenue decline in company history, coming on the! heels of an underwhelming second quarter this summer. Fool contributor Rupert Hargreaves notes that the FDA's initiated an investigation on Intuitive's da Vinci surgical robotics systems, after it found several discrepancies in its incident reports. As a result, quarterly sales of the da Vinci declined from 155 units to 101 units, a drop that can only be partly blamed on slowing demand for medical devices in the U.S. Intuitive may have underperformed compared to recently acquired MAKO Surgical (NASDAQ: MAKO  ) and Accuray (NASDAQ: ARAY  ) over the past year, but it remains the 800-pound gorilla among these industry peers.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The companies that are hit hardest by the tax are those that are already unprofitable even before paying the new levy. For up-and-coming robotics-maker MAKO Surgical (NASDAQ: MAKO  ) , which has already lost $32.5 million on revenue of slightly more than $100 million over the past 12 months, imposing what could be up to $2.3 million in additional medical-device taxes not only adds insult to injury but threatens MAKO's ability to keep growing.

Another 'Black Widow' Bombing in Russia

MOSCOW (TheStreet) -- At least 16 people were killed and 44 injured, allegedly by a female suicide bomber at a check point in a train station in the Russian city of Volgograd. Russian news agency RIA Novosti said earlier that it could be the work of Oksana Aslanova, a native of Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan, and widow of a militant group leader.

DNA tests will be performed to confirm the bomber's identity.

Security for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, already under scrutiny, continues to be in the spotlight as attention-grabbing violence persists in Russia.

There have been two other similar attacks in the last two months. On Friday, Dec. 27, a car bomb claimed two lives in Pyatigorsk, about a 9-hour drive from Sochi. In October, another young female detonated a bomb that killed 6 and inured 37 on a commuter bus in Volgograd. That attack was allegedly carried out by another "black widow," Naida Asiyalova, 30-year old woman from Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan.

Dagestan has been fragmented by unrest since the mid-1990s. More than 260 militants have been killed this year in the North Caucasus region, according to a national anti-terrorism committee statement to RIA Novosti. Women known as "black widow" bombers are typically related to "Islamist" rebels who have been killed by Russian security forces. Suicide, however, is an act that conflicts with the religion of Islam.

Time Warner Cable lost 300,000 subscribers amid CBS blackout

time warner cable

The dispute between Time Warner Cable and CBS led to a month-long programming blackout.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Time Warner Cable lost a startling 306,000 television subscribers in the third quarter, and the company said part of that drop was due to its month-long fight with CBS.

The TV subscriber losses, which Time Warner Cable revealed in its quarterly report Thursday, were much higher than Wall Street expected. Nomura analyst Adam Ilkowitz said he was "shocked" by the steep figure.

Ilkowitz estimates that about 100,000 to 150,000 of the quarter's subscriber losses were due to the CBS blackout. The company didn't specify how many TV subscribers canceled because of the CBS blackout, but Time Warner Cable did acknowledge in its report that the dispute "negatively impacted" subscriber numbers.

Analysts expected some degree of fallout from the contentious battle, which centered around how much Time Warner Cable (TWC, Fortune 500) should pay CBS (CBS, Fortune 500)for the right to transmit its programming.

The war hit customers Aug. 2, when the cable provider pulled CBS stations off the air in several cities. That affected three million customers in cities where CBS owns the affiliate stations that carry the network.

Time Warner Cable customers nationwide lost access to three CBS-owned premium cable networks: Showtime, The Movie Channel and The Smithsonian Channel.

The two companies finally came to an agreement in early September, a few weeks before the quarter ended. But that was too late for many Time Warner Cable subscribers.

Best Small Cap Stocks To Buy Right Now

"We hope to hear more on how TWC will 'get back up,'" Ilkowitz wrote in a note to clients.

Time Warner Cable now has 11.4 million TV subscribers.

The CBS battle affected Time Warner Cable beyond subscriber losses. The company was forced to issue $15 million in credits during the quarter to customers who paid for the CBS-owned premium channels like Showtime. To top of page

We re-established an investment in CME Group, Inc. (CME) during the period. CME is the largest and most diversified derivatives marketplace in the U.S. Its exchanges support trading across a variety of asset classes, including interest rates, equity indexes, energy, agricultural commodities, foreign exchange and metals. We believe CME has the opportunity to significantly accelerate its growth rates due to the eventual normalization of interest rates and the attendant interest rate volatility. CME's interest rate trading volumes (ADV) have been depressed as a result of the Fed's zero interest rate policy and low interest rate volatility. For example, interest rate ADV was 4.8 million in 2012compared to 7.1 million in 2007, before the financial crisis. However, given the Fed's recent policy statements (discussed above), market participants are starting to antici! pate an end to quantitative easing (QE). On May 30, CME experienced record volume for interest rate derivatives wi th ADV of 19.4 million. With the globalization of CME's business, a host of new products, and the regulatory requirement for interest rate swaps to be cleared on an exchange, we believe CME's interest rate volumes can surpass their prior peak, significantly driving earnings growth for the company.

Top Rising Stocks To Buy For 2014: (AMC)

AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc., through its subsidiaries, operates as a theatrical exhibition company in the United States and internationally. As of June 30, 2011, it owned, operated, or had interests in 357 theatres and 5,098 screens in 31 states and the District of Columbia, and 4 countries outside the United States. The company was founded in 1920 and is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. As of August 30, 2012, AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. operates as a subsidiary of Dalian Wanda Group Corporation Ltd.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rick Aristotle Munarriz]

Frederic J. Brown, AFP/Getty Images Moviegoers aren't heading out the multiplex the way they used to, but that doesn't mean that Hollywood is toast. AMC Entertainment (AMC) reported quarterly results Tuesday. The nation's leading exhibitor -- 345 theaters with 4,976 screens -- went public two months ago. The headline numbers are positive. Revenue increased a better than expected 2.3 percent to $713 million. Profitability also expanded nicely. However, revenue increased as a result of a 5.5 percent increase in ticket prices and a 3.7 percent uptick in concessions purchased by patrons. Obviously you don't see those kind of gains against a mere 2.3 percent lift in revenue without dealing with more empty seats, and that's just what happened. There was a 3.2 percent decline in attendance. AMC's ticket takers welcomed 50.4 million guests during the holiday quarter, well below the 52.1 million guests that it entertained a year earlier. That's bad, and what makes things worse is that it had fewer theaters -- from continuing operations -- a year earlier. It wouldn't be wise to hold out for a Hollywood ending. Customers Want Bigger and Better Things Apologists will argue that it wasn't a bumper crop of movies hitting theaters, but that's not accurate at all. Last year's biggest box office winner -- "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" -- opened in November. Disney's "Frozen" also opened ahead of the holidays, and it's the family entertainment giant's biggest non-Pixar earner since 1994's "The Lion King." Moviegoers still come out for the big movies, and they're also willing to pay more for a premium setting. IMAX (IMAX) reported blowout quarterly results a few days earlier. IMAX screens rang up a record $244 million in ticket sales worldwide. IMAX is also closing out the year with a record backlog of 384 commercial theaters to deploy. RealD (RLD) is also holding up nicely as a leading provider of 3-D systems for exhibitors. It enjoyed a major boost with "Gravity," a

  • [By Holly LaFon]

Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BKRKY) (Persero) Tbk PT, a leading commercial bank and microfinance lender in Indonesia, declined in the third quarter. Recent stock performance was largely attributable to a significant drop in the Indonesian Rupiah. While we believe the company's fundamentals and competitive position remain sound, the country suffered a larger than expected deterioration in its current account deficit, leading to a weaker currency and higher interest rates, which negatively impacted its local equity market. After all, there is that old quote attributed to Mark Twain: "Buy land, they're not making it anymore." Moreover, February Wall Street Journal article noted that From 2009 to mid-2013, average prices for agricultural land in theUS rose by half while in Iowa, Nebraska and some other Midwest farm states, prices more than doubled. However, the same article noted that there is mounting evidence that the farmlandboom is fizzling out asfarmland prices in Iowa fell 3% over the second half of last year and those in Nebraska fell 1%. The good news though is that today's agricultural sector looks markedly different than it did during the last farmland bust back inthe early 1980s while Greyson Colvin, the managing partner at investment manager Colvin & Co. 5 Best Bank Stocks To Watch Right Now

Shares of Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) are lower today after mixed news from its ongoing legal battles continues to trickle in. Roughly halfway through the trading session, the nation's second largest lender is down by $0.07, or 0.53%.

In a decision issued yesterday, a judge in New York denied a motion by bond insurer MBIA (NYSE: MBI  ) which would have held Bank of America wholly liable for all of Countrywide Financial's pre-crisis misdeeds. While the bank has verbally committed to assuming Countrywide's liabilities -- its CEO Brian Moynihan said in 2010 that, "At the end of the day, we'll pay for the things Countrywide did" -- that's a far cry from being legally obligated to.

The issue, known as "successor liability," has been used as a bargaining chip by Bank of America in negotiations with various parties throughout a multitude of settlement discussions -- most importantly an $8.5 billion agreement with institutional investors in mortgage bonds backed by Countrywide-issued home loans. The fear was that an adverse ruling in the MBIA case could therefore influence other legal proceedings and settlement discussions.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Big bank HSBC Holdings (HBC) is forming a triangle of its own, albeit one of a different variety than the setup in TRI. HBC is currently forming a symmetrical triangle, a pattern that's formed by converging trendlines squeezing in on the stock's price at a nearly even rate. The symmetrical triangle has less upside bias than the ascending triangle we just looked at, but the trading trigger is essentially the same -- a breakout outside of the pattern is the signal to make a move.

Because the pattern in HBC is less biased, it's not a pure bullish setup; a breakdown through the bottom of the pattern is a signal that it makes sense to either sell or go short. That floor is currently in place at 50-day moving average. A breakout above the channel's upper trendline (currently right around $56) is the signal to buy.

That doesn't mean that a downward or upward breakout are equally likely in HBC. Higher lows in momentum, as measured by 14-day RSI, is adding some extra probability to the upside right now. Still, don't actually put a position in on HSBC until the breakout happens. That's when it becomes a high-probability trade.

Advisors' Opinion:

Despite growing expenses, in local currency terms, the bank's net income improved 16% year-over-year (yoy) while Non-Performing-Loans (NPL) have been kept below 4%. Hence, through Galicia, you can invest in an operationally healthy bank that shall behave in line with government bonds. Trading at 3 times P/E and 75% book value I think Galicia is good bet within the space.

    High Exposure to Public Debt

Banco Macro (BMA) has been one of the highest growing banks during the last two decades. One interesting thing about Banco Macro is that the bank owns approximately $400 million of government related securities when the bank's total market capitalization is now just above $1 billion. On the other hand, Banco Macro is growing earnings aggressively at a 39% year over year rate in local currency terms with a very low (and stable) 1.6% NPL rate. Banco Macro is slightly more expensive than Galicia trading at 80% its book value and 3.2 times P/E.

Marco Bank (BMA) offers a range of traditional banking products and services to corporates, SME's and individuals in Argentina. This stock closed up 5.6% at $20.93 in Monday's trading session.

    Monday's Volume: 404,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 78,386

    Volume % Change: 504%

From a technical perspective, BMA jumped sharply higher here right above some near-term support at $19 with strong upside volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last two months and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $13.63 to its recent high of $21.73. During that move, shares of BMA have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of BMA within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if BMA manages to take out its 52-week high at $21.73 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in BMA as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $19 to $18.29 and then once it sustains a move or close above its 52-week high at $21.73 with volume that's near or above 78,386 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then BMA will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $25 to $27.

The Company developed a technology to insert human genes into yeast cells to create hybrid yeast cells. Its scientists created hybrid yeast cells by replacing yeast G Protein-coupled receptor genes and certain signaling molecules with their human equivalents. As a result, these hybrid yeast cells express a human G Protein-coupled receptor and a portion of its signaling pathway. These hybrid yeast cells can be used to identify those compounds that act as agonists or antagonists to that receptor or a molecule that is in its signaling pathway. The Company designed and developed more than 25 thousand genetically different yeast strains that can be used to build hybrid yeast cells (the Yeast System).

The Company competes with Glaxo Smith Kline, Plc.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] cash producing business like ADDvantage (AEY) that happens to be overcapitalized. I'd much rather own a business with real earnings rather than wait for something to happen with a pile of cash.

My question is this: How cheap is cheap enough? Clearly (to me), George Risk (RSKIA) is cheap at or even just above book value. It's a darn good business so I'm getting high quality assets and earnings power. That gets less clear when looking at lower quality businesses.

    For example:

Solitron (SODI) sells at 74% of NCAV, has decent z- and f-scores, a FCF margin of 5.3% and an ROA of 12%.

The impact for its customers, including Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) and Great Plains Energy (NYSE: GXP), may be more acute in the short term. Where to invest?
There are countless possibilities for building your retirement portfolio to cover Social Security's gap, depending on your personal risk tolerance, timeline, and need for cash. Here are decent index-style ETFs across various asset types to consider when building your plan:

Domestic stocks. The Vanguard Total Market (NYSEMKT: VTI  ) ETF is a one-stop-shop that gives you access to around 99.5% by market cap of the publicly held U.S. stocks traded on major exchanges. A mere 3% turnover and microscopically low 0.05% expense ratio makes this a low-cost way to invest in the overall stock market. Investment-grade bonds. The iShares iBoxx $Invest Grade Corp Bond (NYSEMKT: LQD  ) ETF owns nearly $24 billion worth of investment-grade corporate bonds. A small 4% turnover and low 0.15% expense ratio make this a low-cost way to get bond exposure. Real estate. The SPDR Dow Jones REIT (NYSEMKT: RWR  ) ETF has a bit over $2 billion invested in real estate investment trusts, attempting to match the Dow Jones Select REIT index. With a reasonable 7% turnover and a still pretty low 0.25% expense ratio, this is a reasonable way to get real estate exposure without turning yourself into a landlord. Foreign stocks. Vanguard's Total International Stock Index (NASDAQ: VXUS  ) ETF has nearly $90 billion in foreign stocks under its control, owning pieces of more than 6,100 stocks from 45 countries. With a mere 3% turnover and low 0.16% expense ratio, it's one of the lowest-cost ways to get your hands on foreign companies without being an international accounting expert. Inflation-protected government bonds. The iShares Barclays TIPS Bond (NYSEMKT: TIP  ) ETF has around $20 billion invested in U.S. Treasury inflation-protected bonds. With a low expense ratio of 0.2% and a reasonable 10% turnover rate, it's a decent way to get exposure to inflation-protected bonds. Note, though, that

Best Net Payout Yield Companies To Own For 2014

Advisors are falling behind in helping their aging clients prepare for what could likely be one of their most costly expenses in retirement: where to live, according to a just-released study by Legg Mason.

Legg Mason recently collaborated with the Center for Innovative Care in Aging at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing to create a new Planning for Housing advisor education program.

A new survey of 506 financial advisors by Legg Mason found that only 14% of advisors have helped their clients develop specific plans to address their future long-term housing needs, such as downsizing, moving to a retirement community or preparing for advanced care. This lack of focus on their clients’ housing needs in retirement comes despite the fact that nearly half of the advisors surveyed (45%) said they have “personally considered other housing options” for their own retirement.

The advisors polled said that the primary reason they have not helped their clients plan for their housing in retirement is because “My clients do not ask about it,” while 26% of the advisors who have not helped clients plan for housing in retirement said they do not feel “knowledgeable enough about the topic” to address it.

Obviously, all humans are fallible, and I'm sure someone can find just as much to argue with my long case as I found to argue with his short case. Please read for yourself, do your own research, and make your own decision. I am long IFT and plan on fully participating in the rights offering.

  • [By DCResearch]

Imperial Holdings (IFT) fits the bill for all of those traits and investors today can buy Imperial Holdings for less than 0.75x book value. Upside to book value, an obvious valuation factor for most financial companies, would result in a greater than 40% return for a patient investor. I believe that this is far below the fair value for IFT book of life settlements, and upside is in excess of $13 per share.

Ariad Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ARIA  ) gained FDA approval for its leukemia drug Iclusigat the end of last year and managed $6.4 million in sales in the first quarter. That's a pretty decent start, and the drug should be launched in Europe next month, accelerating sales further.

In terms of specific company upside/downside payoffs, we believe that [Brookfield Residential Properties (BRP)], [KB Home], and [PulteGroup] offer above-average payoffs. We note that more than half of [Brookfield Residential Properties'] earnings are derived from Canada, dampening EPS sensitivity to our assumptions regarding the pace of the U.S. housing recovery. We believe that [KB Home] will achieve sharply improved operating performance, which should drive robust EPS growth given the company comparatively high degree of financial leverage. We also have a high degree of confidence that[PulteGroup] will continue to successfully execute against its goal of improving ROIC performance, which should act as a catalyst for share price appreciation.
