Top Warren Buffett Companies To Invest In 2014

Some of the best stocks in our portfolio are blue-chip companies with among the most recognizable corporate names in the world, explains Ian Wyatt, in his $100k Portfolio. Here, he looks at the holding company of Warren Buffett.

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B) remains attractively valued, with plenty of room to grow. Since legendary investor Warren Buffett took control of the former textile company in 1965, Berkshire Hathaway has grown its book value by an average of nearly 20% a year.

That's more than double the 9.4% annualized return of the S&P 500 (SPX) during that time. In a nutshell, Buffett and his business partner Charlie Munger have the best long-term investment track record in the world.

Berkshire Hathaway's outstanding track record is the reason I added the stock to the $100k Portfolio back in March 2011. Since then, it's up 36%. That performance is likely to continue in the years ahead, even after Buffett is no longer running the company.

Berkshire Hathaway is sitting on a mountain of cash. In the last year, the company generated cash flow of $13.8 billion. The balance sheet is cash rich too. Berkshire already has $42 billion in cash and $29 billion in short-term bonds. With a stockpile of nearly $75 billion, Berkshire is highly liquid and prepared to make big acquisitions.

Small cap stocks Chromadex Corp (OTCMKTS: CDXC) and 22nd Century Group Inc (OTCBB: XXII) are, one way or the other, focused on natural products and have been getting some extra attention lately. Moreover, one of these stocks have been the subject of a disclosed investor awareness campaign. Keeping that in mind, are these two small cap stocks natural winners for investors? Here is a quick look:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

While it's only been a little over a week since yours truly named 22nd Century Group Inc. (NYSEMKT:XXII) as one of the market's best-looking breakout opportunities, circumstances dictate the message rather than the other way around. That's the indirect way of saying XXII has continued on ahead, behaving as expected, punching through its key ceilings and solidifying the bullishness it was hinting at late last month.

    Flood of expenses
Ironwood Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: IRWD  ) shares fell 12% this week, after the company reported first-quarter results. A big part of the drugmaker's problems stemmed from soaring sales and administrative costs.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

They explain why they favor Steel Dynamics (STLD) and Nucor (NUE) over US Steel and AK Steel:

For the steel companies, we continue to believe that lower raw material costs and increased imports will pressure sheet prices lower. Given this cautious stance, we continue to prefer Nucor and Steel Dynamics (over AK Steel and US Steel) given their variable cost structures and significant leverage to an eventual recovery in non-residential construction.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of U.S. Steel have dropped 2.9% to 25.57 at 10:03 a.m. but don’t seem to have impact other steel stocks much, if at all. Steel Dynamics (STLD) has dropped 0.6% to $18.07, while Nucor (NUE) has dipped 0.2% to $51.56. ArcelorMittal (MT), however, has gained 0.2% to $16.15 and AK Steel (AKS) has risen 0.6% to $6.92.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Analysts tend to group steel makers into two groups–AK Steel (AKS) and US Steel (X), who are more reliant on higher steel prices, and Steel Dynamics (STLD) and Nucor (NUE), who have more flexibility in their businesses.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Holly LaFon]

Charlie: Yes, I have a question. Do you think the opportunity is more in stocks or in debt, or both? If you look at Spain, the biggest companies in Spain, one is a bank, Bank Santander (STD). The other is Telefonica (TEF), a phone company. What other opportunities do you see there?

  • [By Chandan Dubey]

This article will describe what a bank does. Then we will move on to reading the balance sheet of a bank. As an example, I take the balance sheet of one of my holdings, Banco Santander (STD).
