Like gold, silver is having a nice run, and investors are taking notice.
The iShares Silver Trust ETF (SLV) moved up 9% last week, while the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) ticked up 2%.
ETF Securities recently focused on the precious metal’s changing outlook in its newsletter Silver Shines as Gold: Silver Ratio at 3-Year High Attracts Investors.
To understand the major factors driving the uptick in silver, ThinkAdvisor spoke with Mike McGlone, CFA, FRM, director of U.S. research for ETF Securities in New York.
Gold-to-Silver Price Ratio
This ratio can give investors a sense of relative valuation.
Before 2008, it took roughly 50 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold, says McGlone. During the recent economic crisis, the ratio increased to 80.
As of early August, the ratio was 66-to-1.
At that level, says McGlone, it “looks like silver at 66 is generally pretty cheap vs. gold, or you can say gold is rich vs. silver.”

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Stephen Faulkner]
Some Sirius XM (SIRI) investors are fond of saying, "never a dull moment in SIRIland." That seems to hold true unless you count the last few months. It seemed many investors were, quite frankly, getting sick and tired of the range bound activity.

Sirius XM Radio provides audio entertainment and information via subscription services to a growing listener base. A recent earnings release has the markets expecting more from the company. The stock has been trending higher in recent years and is currently near highs for the year. Over the last four quarters, earnings have been mixed while revenues have been rising which has produced conflicting feelings among investors. Relative to its peers and sector, Sirius XM Radio has been a weak year-to-date performer. Look for Sirius XM Radio to OUTPERFORM.

To be fair, the year-over-year comparisons of the top and bottom line were positive last quarter. A stock’s value is largely dictated by expectations, however, and now the market realizes it might have been expecting too much from KB Home. That could prove to be a drag on KBH stock for several months.

Another under-$10 wireless telecom player that's starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Partner Communications (PTNR), a telecommunications company, provides cellular and fixed-line telecommunication services in Israel. This stock is off to a strong start in 2013, with shares up sharply by 29%.
If you take a look at the chart for Partner Communications, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways for the last month, with shares moving between $7.28 on the downside and $7.96 on the upside. Shares of PTRN are bucking the overall market weakness today as the stock starts to move within range of triggering a breakout trade above the upper-end of its sideways trading chart pattern.
Market players should now look for long-biased trades in PTNR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $7.80 to $7.85 a share and then once it clears its 52-week high at $7.96 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 107,303 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PTNR will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $10 to $12.20 a share.
Traders can look to buy PTNR off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $7.38 to $7.28, or below its 50-day at $6.97 a share. One can also buy PTNR off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

In contrast, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC ) has embraced the trend to mobile banking, repeatedly mentioning mobile when it discusses consumer strategy. The bank reports that more than $9.3 million in deposits were processed via smartphone camera in Q1, a 36% increase over Q4 2012. The renewed focus is helping boost Bank of America in mobile banking, with 30% year-over-year growth in mobile users. That acceleration, based on the momentum shown in Meeker's presentation, is likely to continue.

Poor Bank of America (NYSE: BAC ) . After seeing its share price rise spectacularly in the week prior to its first-quarter earnings report, the stock took a real drubbing immediately after that report was issued. Today, it is getting beat up anew, and I think it is still feeling the consternation of investors about its less-than-sparkly earnings announcement.
