10 Best Oil Stocks To Invest In Right Now

NEW YORK (AP) -- Oil rose to the highest level since January amid concerns about a possible escalation in Syria's civil war.

Benchmark oil for July delivery rose $1.16 to close at $97.85 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil finished the week with a gain of $1.82 a barrel, or 1.9 percent.

President Barack Obama's decision, revealed Thursday, to provide some weapons to rebels fighting the forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad came after the White House said it had convincing evidence that Assad's regime -- which has been supported by Russia, Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah -- had used chemical weapons against the opposition.

The Middle East is a key source of crude oil and important transit routes cross the region, so conflicts which threaten disruptions in crude production or supply usually push oil prices higher.

"The possibility of unrest spreading into larger oil-producing regions such as Saudi Arabia and Iraq" induced some buying Friday, said Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates. However, he said, "the current large amount of unused OPEC productive capacity provides a sizable cushion against any temporary loss of supply from countries other than Saudi Arabia."

Advisors' Opinion:

The final two big gainers didn't have any company specific news that sent them rocketing higher today, but instead, relied on a very big rally in natural gas for their ascent. Following yesterday's data, which showed a 94-billion cubic foot reduction in natural gas inventories, spot natural gas prices jumped higher by better than 4%. That was enough of a propellant to send natural gas-heavy independent E&P companies like Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG  ) and WPX Energy (NYSE: WPX  ) higher by 5.1% and 5.2%, respectively.

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

Several investors wrote off natural gas plays after spot prices bottomed out last year, but the subsequent rise in gas prices hasn't seemed to change the opinion of many investors. It's a shame, because they could be missing out on some great companies that could make big returns in the future. One company that comes to mind is WPX Energy (NYSE: WPX  ) , which just announced that its most recent well in the Piceance Basin of Colorado sported an impressive 100-day output of 1 billion cubic feet of gas.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

Last November Tulsa-based oil and gas producerWPX Energy(NYSE: WPX)announced its intentionto spin off production assets in Colorado. WPX Energy Partners will hold working interests in mature natural gas properties in the Piceance Basin of Colorado. The announcement indicated a desire to carry out the IPO during the first half of 2014, but the company has yet to file forms with the SEC.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt DiLallo]

    Pure play on pure water
Environmental services and frack water treatment company,Heckmann (NYSE: NES  ) trades at less than $4 a share. There's a reason for that low share price the company's business model clouds the market's perception of its future value. Until the company can clear that up, the shares likely will stay in penny stock territory.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

    Indispensable value
One of the key environmental issues of fracking is disposing of the water after it's been used. However, because of the rapid production growth in many new plays, this disposal infrastructure simply doesn't exist. Instead of hiring a company like frack-water treatment specialistHeckmann (NYSE: NES  ) to truck the produced water away, some companies are simply building their own disposal systems.

Advisors' Opinion:

Oil firms were rising, tracking oil prices higher. Shares of BG Group PLC (UK:BG) picked up 0.8%, BP PLC (UK:BP) (BP) added 0.6% and Royal Dutch Shell PLC (UK:RDSB) (RDS.B) inched 0.1% higher.

  • [By Cash Flow Investor]

Using this alternative payout ratio has saved me from a few situations in which the traditional payout ratio indicated that the dividend was covered - only for the company to later declare a dividend freeze or cut when the free cash flow ran out. One specific example is Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.B), the global oil behemoth.

  • [By Sara Sjolin]

Oil prices were also lower, weighing on the U.K. oil firms. Shares of Royal Dutch Shell PLC (UK:RDSB) (RDS.B) gave up 0.9%, BG Group PLC (UK:BG) shed 0.4% and BP PLC (UK:BP) (BP) lost 0.2%.

Small cap stocks MineralRite Corp (OTCMKTS: RITE), New China Global Inc (OTCMKTS: NCGI) and Metrospaces Inc (OTCMKTS: MSPC) have all been getting some extra attention lately in various investment newsletters thanks to a few paid promotions. Of course, there is nothing wrong with properly disclosed promotions or investor relations type of activities, but they can and often do backfire on unwary investors and traders alike. So how hot are these three small caps for investors? Here is a quick reality check:

10 Best Oil Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Gastar Exploration Ltd (GST)

Gastar Exploration Ltd (Gastar) is an independent energy company engaged in the exploration, development and production of natural gas and oil in the United States. The Company is a holding company. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By David Smith]

Earlier, the company had pocketed $75.2 million by selling to Gastar Exploration (NYSEMKT: GST  ) leasehold acreage in Oklahoma's Kingfisher and Canadian counties. It'll obviously require a passel of sales of that magnitude to shore up an overweight balance sheet.

  • [By Heather Ingrassia]

Gastar Agreement: On April 1st it was announced that Gastar Exploration, Ltd. (GST) had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire proven reserves and undeveloped leasehold interests in Kingfisher and Canadian counties of Oklahoma from Chesapeake Energy Corporation, repurchase Chesapeake's common shares of the Company and settle all litigation for $1 million. Although smaller in scope than most of Chesapeake's previous asset-shedding transactions, the agreement with Gastar accomplishes two things. First, is the fact the settlement resolves the legal wrangling both companies were engaged in and as a result Chesapeake walks away with $85 million of the potential $130 million they were suing for. Second, is the fact Chesapeake wipes it hands of acreage, that although producing, may not be producing as much as Chesapeake had once hoped, and therefore was worth much more to Gastar in the long run.
